5 Signs You Need Duct Cleaning

It’s easy to forget about cleaning and maintaining your furnace and duct work. If everything is working properly, why give it a second thought? Your ducts require cleaning every 2 to 5 years. Neglecting to do so can diminish the quality of air in your home and even hurt your energy efficiency. Britcan Furnace Cleaning & More in Edmonton shares some signs you need furnace and duct cleaning:

1. You’ve noticed more dust in the house.

If your furnace or air conditioning kicks in and you see a puff of dust come out of the register, it’s time for a duct cleaning. If you’ve noticed more dust on the floor, tables or other surfaces on your home, it could be coming from the ducts. You would be surprised how much dust and debris can be lurking inside your ductwork and when the air flows, it gets blown into your home’s living spaces.

2. Strange smells in the house.

If you have strange odours in your house, but can’t detect where it is coming from, it could be something inside of the ducts. Although it’s uncommon, sometimes pests like mice can get into the ductwork and die there, stinking up the house every time the heat comes on. More likely than that, you might have mildew, mold or other debris in the ducts. Sniff around your registers, if you smell something nasty – give Britcan a call!

If you can see mold, you will have to call a mold testing and removal company to take care of it for you. Do not delay as mold can be very hazardous to your health.

3. You can see debris when you investigate the registers.

Take off one of your air registers and peak into the duct. If you find pet hair, dust or debris from a recent home renovation, try removing it as far as you can reach. Check again the next day. If there is more debris, it means it is coming from inside the ducts and needs to be sucked out.

4. Your furnace filter is clogged.

You should be changing your furnace filter every few months to keep it operating at peak performance. If you have recently changed the filter, but notice it is still very dirty and clogged, it could mean it’s time for a furnace and duct cleaning.

5. You can’t remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned.

If you’ve lived in your house for a long time and can’t recall the last time you had your ducts clean…you are overdue! If you’ve just moved into a house and have no record of when the HVAC system was last cleaned, you should contact Britcan Furnace Cleaning & More to clean the ducts and furnace for you.
