Decks vs patios: knowing which is for your yard

Adding a new deck or patio to your backyard is a great exterior renovation that can really boost your property’s resale value, as well as boost your lifestyle value. Both options create a new space to sit outdoors, enjoy your yard or to entertain or gather with family. Once you’ve settled on the purpose of your new renovation, it is just a matter of deciding between the two.

TW Construction in Edmonton are renovation experts and can build either option for you. But first, they share some tips and differences to help narrow down the decision:

Decks: pros and cons

The first major difference between a deck and a patio is that a deck is a raised platform or porch that is an attached outdoor extension of your house. The benefit of this is that it can easily be installed on an uneven terrain. That way yards that are not level or are even hilly, won’t be a hinderance to getting a deck. The price of a deck will usually depend on the material, so installation costs will vary between expensive and not. That being said, decks do see a high return on value. According to Remodeling Magazine’s cost vs value report, a composite deck addition will recoup 69% of the cost, while a wood deck will recoup 75% of the cost.

If you are looking for a return on investment, a space where you host outdoor entertainment, or if you have an unlevel yard, then a deck is a great option. A wooden deck can easily be stained for customization, and because wood naturally absorbs sunlight, it’s ideal for hotter climates. Furthermore, because a deck is additional space, it’s a great way to increase the feel of a smaller home.

Patios: pros and cons

Unlike a deck, a patio is a paved area that is built directly onto the ground. As a result, it is possible to be built attached or detached from your home. Because less is involved in adding a patio, the installation cost will be less expensive. A downside, however, is that the ground level makes it less suited to unlevel terrain. Patios also see a slightly less recoup value, at 55% of the cost, according to Remodeling Magazine. Although on the other hand, with proper care and maintenance, a patio can easily last more than 25 years. Plus, as a backyard visual aesthetic, it is just as appealing to potential buyers for any resale value.

Patios can also easily extend your living space by creating an outdoor extension, as well as serve as an entertainment space. But, if you want low maintenance and an easy way to reduce lawn maintenance, then a patio makes for a great option. They are also low to the ground which means both more privacy, as well as more flexibility to incorporate landscape designs around your new space.
