Drywall types and when to choose what

Drywall is an important material that contractors use to put up walls and ceilings around a home. It is a low-cost material made from gypsum. It’s also really versatile. You can use drywall in almost any area of your home. For example, your bedroom or dining room, kitchen or living room. You can even use drywall in your garage. Different types of drywall offer different features. So, depending on where you’d like to install drywall, certain types will function best.

In this article, Glacier Drywall Systems Inc. in Calgary shares more on each type of drywall and when to choose what.

White Board Drywall

If a contractor uses the term “regular drywall,” it’s usually white board drywall they are referring to.  Contractors use white board drywall for most walls and ceilings around the home. You can use this drywall in most areas of the home. For instance, in a living room, hallway or basement. White board drywall is white on one side and brown on the other. It doesn’t come with any mold or mildew resistance, but it is the most affordable drywall. As a result, it’s a popular choice for the majority of living spaces.

Blue Board Drywall

Blue Board drywall is blue covered, hence the name. Contractors use this type of drywall for plastering veneer. It is both mold and water resistant. This makes it a great choice for bathrooms or for the areas of your home that get more moisture. Blue Board has a higher price point than other drywalls. However, it also provides noise reduction features and low emissions. Choose this drywall for plaster backing as well as for bathrooms.

Green Board Drywall

This is another type of drywall that is a good choice for a bathroom. It is resistant to moisture, but keep in mind it’s not waterproof. You’ll know this drywall type by its green covering. Choose green board as a tile backer. Other places for this drywall include the kitchen and laundry room. Due to its water resistant feature, green board is more expensive than standard drywall.

Purple Board Drywall

This type of drywall provides mold and mildew resistance, as well as water resistance. Also, its water resistance is greater than green and blue board. If you really want to keep the mold and moisture away, this is the drywall to choose. You’ll know it by its purple hue.

Paperless Drywall

Unlike the other drywall types mentioned here, paperless drywall uses fiberglass instead of paper to protect the drywall gypsum board from rot. This type of drywall is great for its durability as well as water resistance. It’s also easy to cut and requires a special joint compound to get a smooth finish on it. This is because paperless drywall comes with some texture.

Type X Drywall

This is the drywall to choose for fire resistance. Type X has fiberglass within its gypsum core.  In addition, a contractor can install Type X in several layers to help slow the progression of fire even further. As a result of its thickness, this type of drywall also has soundproofing benefits. This, coupled with its thickness and fire-resistant qualities, makes it a great choice for apartment and condo buildings.

Ceilings and Sound

If soundproofing is important to you, be sure to speak with your contractor. There are specific sound boards that come in 2 – 1/4″ sheets of drywall. Your contractor will spread green glue liberally between these boards to create a sound barrier. Glacier Drywall Systems Inc. can also suggest other soundproofing materials.

For ceilings, there is CD drywall. This type resists sagging and comes in a variety of lengths. Reach out to Glacier Drywall Systems Inc. for more info!
