Getting your furnace ready for winter

Winter will be here before you know it. Is your home ready? One of the first systems you should prepare for the cold months ahead is your heating system. Doing a little furnace maintenance, having it repaired and properly serviced will give you peace of mind knowing you won’t be caught in the cold this winter.

Night “n” Day Home Services in Edmonton shares some tips on how to get your furnace ready for winter:

Test the thermostat.

It’s been a warm summer, so you probably have your HVAC system set to cooling. Switch the thermostat to heating and turn it up a bit to make the furnace kicks in. If it doesn’t start up in a minute or two, you might have an issue. It could be a connection problem in the thermostat wiring or a problem with the furnace itself. If you’re not sure, call the pros at Night “n” Day to inspect and repair it for you.

Change your furnace filter.

The change of seasons is a great time to swap out the old furnace filter with a clean, new one. Changing the furnace filter regularly, every few months, is part of properly maintaining your HVAC system. Not only does it keep dust and debris out of the furnace, it can prolong its life and help improve energy efficiency too. Learn how to change a furnace filter.

Book a furnace inspection and tune up.

Fall is the best time to have your furnace inspected and tuned up by a professional HVAC technician. They will check over all the components of your heating system to ensure it’s running properly, safely and most efficiently. Having your furnace serviced annually will also allow you to take care of little repairs and preventative maintenance, so you aren’t surprised with a major furnace repair or having to replace it. If the technician finds an issue, they will make recommendations for furnace repair.

Clear the vents.

You haven’t had the heat on for a while, so do a walk through your home and make sure that any registers and return vents are clear of obstructions like blankets, drapes, furniture, etc. Open all the vents so air can flow through. It is also a good time to look into the vents and check for debris or dust build up. If you see a lot of debris in the vent, you can be sure there is more in your ducts. If you haven’t had your ducts cleaned in 2-5 years, it is a good idea to get that job done before the snow flies.

Have your gas utility provider check over your appliances.

A certified HVAC technician can detect any dangerous issues with your furnace during your tune up, but it’s still a good idea to have the system and other gas appliances or systems in your home checked over by your utility provider. ATCO offers FREE natural gas appliances inspections.
