Government incentives make going solar more affordable

Switching to renewable solar power for your home has many benefits. You’ll reduce your carbon footprint, save money on electricity, and even receive a credit from your electrical company when your system produces excess power.

If you’ve been on the fence about solar panels because of the cost, SolarNinjas has good news for you. The Federal Government and the City of Edmonton are offering up to $9,000 in combined solar rebates. Edmonton homeowners have more incentive to make the switch.

Canada Greener Homes Grant

Let’s talk about the Federal rebate first. The Canada Greener Home Grant can put $5,000 into your hands for green home improvements, including solar panels. To max out this grant, you’ll need a minimum system size of only 5,000 watts of PV or about 12 to 16 solar panels.

To put it into perspective, installing solar panels in Edmonton to meet these criteria would fit the roof of a standard double garage. A system of this size can reduce most, but not all, of the annual energy consumed in the average home in Alberta. It won’t get you to the net-zero electrical point, but it’s a really great start. Offsetting your fossil fuel-produced electricity by 50 to 80 percent is still fantastic! We can always go bigger and meet 100% of your electricity needs for a small additional cost!

City of Edmonton Rebates

The City of Edmonton Change Homes for Climate solar rebate program offers up to $4,000 for solar panel installation at $0.40/watt. That can cover about 15% of the cost of your solar installation.

They want to encourage Edmonton residents to switch to a sustainable and renewable energy source. When you combine this City of Edmonton solar rebate with the Canada Greener Homes Grant, you’ll have at least $9,000 to put towards your solar system installation.

How much will it cost?

SolarNinjas estimates that an average urban solar installation will cost between $18,000 and $25,000 – and THEN your rebates come off that price! They also offer zero-down, low-interest financing to help make your switch possible.

There is also a new loan program coming soon from Canada Greener Homes. This new option offers homeowners interest-free loans of up to $40,000 to complete deep home retrofits that improve energy efficiency. This loan will start being available sometime in 2021 or 2022.
