My Journey in the Drywall Industry — 3rd Generation Contractor, Now Employing the 4th

Being a business owner in the trades means living in the pocket between winning big and getting punched in the gut — sometimes in the same week. It’s a rollercoaster, but it’s mine, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

My story started 38 years ago, in the summer of 1986. While the world was buzzing over Expo 86 in Vancouver, I was sweeping floors, hauling scrap drywall, and learning the trade inside my father’s company, Fehr Drywall, out in Abbotsford, BC. He was working on some of the buildings at Expo, and I was the kid trailing behind with a broom and a garbage can — the purest apprentice experience there is.

That’s where my foundation was built: broom first, tools later.

From Apprentice to Entrepreneur

By 1998, I moved to Calgary and jumped in with a boarding crew. Within a few years, I was running sites as a foreman. When the company I was working for shut down, my boss and I took a leap and launched Pro West Drywall.

Our first year?
$4.5 million in contracts.
I was only in my twenties.

Soon after, I moved back to BC and partnered with my dad again to launch Pro West Interiors BC, tackling major projects across Kelowna and the Okanagan.

Then life threw a punch I never saw coming.

The Fire That Took Everything

In 2003, the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire — the largest natural disaster in Canadian history at the time — burned my home to the ground. Everything I owned was gone in one night.

So, I did what tradesmen do when life collapses: I packed what I had left and started over. Again. Back in Calgary.

Those years? They were hard. Floating between jobs. Trying to figure out my next step. Feeling like I was rebuilding from ashes — literally.

And then one night at a multi-level marketing meeting, I gave a presentation…and unknowingly made the best sale of my life.

Her name was Amanda.

Nearly 20 years together now, 16 years married, and three incredible daughters — Brooklyn (15), McKenzie (13), and Emma (10). Best ROI of my career. Hands down.

The Climb Back Up

From 2007 to 2008, we moved to Kelowna to start our family, and I worked with my dad again. I got “pushed” — or promoted, depending on who you ask — into estimating. I spent a decade behind a computer learning drawings, bidding projects, and sharpening the business side of my craft.

Then the 2008 financial crash hit. Work dried up overnight, and we had to head back to Calgary once more.

Over time, I got back on my feet. Old contacts turned into new opportunities. I started landing major multi-family projects across Calgary, Kelowna, Peachland, Victoria, and Red Deer.

By 2019, I hit a milestone I’ll always be proud of:
$10 million in contracts in a single year.

Then, like clockwork, the industry swung back.

When the Industry Breaks You (Twice)

First came U.S. tariffs that crushed material pricing and profitability. Then COVID hit. Projects stalled. Delays piled up. Some jobs simply weren’t financially viable anymore.

Still, I pushed forward. I completed buildings in Lacombe and Red Deer as a one-man general, but when a developer collapsed financially, I was left last on the list of unpaid trades.

Pennies on the dollar.

That was the moment of clarity:
The construction industry is broken.
High risk, low margins, and everyone fighting for scraps.

I had spent decades building for everyone else. Now it was time to build something for myself — something sustainable, profitable, and built around service… not speculation.

The Rebuild: Patchmasters Drywall Repair

In 2019, I made the biggest pivot of my career.

I walked away from the unstable world of big contracts and built Patchmasters Drywall Repair — a service-based company focused on drywall repairs, ceiling texture, and painting. No more gambling on giant projects where one developer’s failure wipes out your year.

It was the smartest business decision of my career.
