Signs your asphalt roof is failing

This old asphalt roof needs to be replaced.

Spring and summer are a great time for a roof replacement. Installation is quicker and more efficient, and the warmer weather is better for the materials. Have your roof replaced this summer and it’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about when winter hits again.

Asonic Roofing and Construction Ltd. in Calgary shares some signs your asphalt roof is failing:

There are bare spots on your roof.

If your asphalt roof looks like it has spots, it is probably failing you. Overtime, the little granules in the asphalt singles will wear out and fall away from the roof. These areas can harden over time and cause bare spots in your roofing. All those granules are probably lurking in your gutters, so if you have bare spots, inspect your gutters and clean them out too.

Shingles are curling and clawing.

When asphalt shingles get years of sun exposure and start to deteriorate, they can curl, claw or do both. Curling is when the edges of the shingle tabs are curled upwards. This can make them act like little sails, catching the wind and flying off the roof. Clawing is when they curl into the roof. It’s normal for an aging room, but makes your roof less protected from wind, ice, hail and rain. Plus, it can diminish your curb appeal and resale value.

The shingles are breaking off.

Have you noticed little bits of shingles laying around your yard? When you look at your roof from the street, can you see areas where shingles are broken or missing? Extreme storm and wind conditions can wreak havoc on your roof and shingles. Whether your roof is old or brand new, it can still sustain damage when the conditions are intense. If you have any missing or broken shingles, they won’t be able to effectively assist with water run off, especially if the damage is near the peak of the roof. If this is the case for your roof, call in the pros at Asonic Roofing for a replacement.

Flashing is no longer doing its job.

Metal flashing is installed around your vents and chimney. Sometimes it’s installed along the walls and valleys of your roof. If it is damaged, you could have water coming in these vulnerable areas. Sometimes damaged flashing is not noticeable from the ground, and any issues are discovered with water coming in the house. If you’re not sure, have a roofing contractor come give your roof an inspection. They’ll be able to see damaged flashing, as well as other roofing issues, and make suggestions for a repair or replacement. Learn how to repair leaks in roof flashing.
