Rubber Roofing vs. Asphalt Shingles

If you have noticed your shingles are curling, peeling or coming away from your roof than it is probably time for a roof replacement. The most common type of roofing for Alberta homeowners is asphalt shingles, but new innovative products like rubber roofing have entered the market. Here is some information on rubber roofing and asphalt singles to help you make the best decision on your new roof.

Rubber Roofing

Relatively new to the scene, rubber roofing is an attractive and durable option that comes with many benefits. Rubber roofing can mimic the look rock or wood slate shingles, comes in a variety of colours and textures and can match or enhance the aesthetics of your home.

Rubber roofing is very durable and long-lasting. It is resistant to exposure to heat and discolouring in the sun, moisture, cracking and rotting. It will defend your home against all weather including rain, snow, rain, wind and sleet.

Rubber shingles are made from mostly recycled materials, usually out of old rubber tires. Imagine all the tires used to shingle your entire roof and how you are doing your part to keep those rubber tires out of the landfill. Since rubber lasts so long, you also won’t have to worry about frequent replacements either.

As far as cost is concerned, a rubber roofing system will cost more than asphalt shingles. Rubber roofing can last much longer than asphalt roofing and are very energy efficient. This can help you save money in the long run. The installation of rubber roofing does not require as much labour compared to other roofing materials, reducing the amount of time spent on prepping your roof and the amount you spend on labour costs.

Asphalt Shingles

As previously mentioned, asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roofing material among homeowners. They are cost-effective and relatively cheaper compared to metal, tile, wood, rubber and other roofing materials. An asphalt roof can last 15 years or more, depending on installation and the quality of the products used. They can also be aesthetically pleasing and offer good protection for your home at a fraction of the cost of other roofing materials.

Unfortunately, asphalt does not stand up well against UV rays. This is why they deteriorate, start to peel or curl on south facing surfaces especially. They are not especially eco-friendly, especially when compared to recycled rubber roofing, and according to ecohome.net, contribute to 8 percent of total construction waste in landfills.
