Troubleshooting Hot Water Heater Problems

Your hot water heater should last up to 10 years, but over time things can start to corrode and malfunction. Unfortunately, when a hot water heater tank needs to be replaced, it usually lets you know with a damaging leak or even a flood in the utility room. If your water smells funny, isn’t heating up or you’ve noticed a leak you could have an issue.

Nanos Plumbing and Heating in Edmonton share common hot water heater issues and troubleshooting tips:

Red coloured water:

If the hot water is a reddish or another colour, you could have rust and/or sediment building up in the tank. There isn’t much you can do with a rusted-out tank, but you can get that sediment out by draining the water, flushing the tank and refilling it. Learn how to flush a hot water tank.

No hot water:

If you have no hot water, check the hot water heater’s thermostat, gas valve and burner. Sometimes the pilot light has gone out and just needs to be restarted. Sediment can also cause issues with the heating elements. If you’re unsure, contact a plumbing and heating contractor to fix it for you.

Low hot water pressure:

If you have low water pressure when you turn on the hot water tap, it could have something to do with the faucet, connecting the plumbing or in some cases, the hot water heater itself. In this case, call in the pros to troubleshoot and remedy the issues.

Water is way to hot:

If the water is scalding coming out of the tap, you probably just need to turn down the temperature setting on your hot water heater. If that doesn’t work, you could have an issue with your thermostat and that will need professional repair.

Noticeable leaks from the tank:

If your hot water heater tank is leaking from one of the connections at the top of the tank, that plumbing can be repaired or replaced. If it’s leaking near the bottom of the tank, it probably means the tank itself is likely corroding and will need to be replaced.

If you are unfamiliar with your hot water heater, it is always a good idea to call a professional for service and new tank installation. Dealing with gas lines, plumbing and dangerously hot water should not be attempted by DIYers.
