DIY vs. Hire a Handyman

Hands of Handyman with a tool belt.

When you can fix something at home yourself, it can be very satisfying. Not only did you learn a new skill, you also saved a little bit of money by getting the job done yourself! There are some home repair and maintenance jobs that are easy for do-it-yourselfers, and some that are best left for the pros. HGB Construction in Edmonton shares more:

Fix a Leaky Faucet – DIY

It may seem like just a few drops of water, but a leaking faucet can waste a lot of water over time and start increasing your monthly utility bill. All you’ll need to fix a leaky faucet is a screwdriver, socket wrench and some replacement seals. You can learn how to fix a leaky faucet here or find an instruction video for your specific faucet on YouTube.

Unclog a pipe – Leave to the Pros

Plunging a clogged toilet is one thing, but if you are having some serious drainage issues in multiple fixtures, you could have major blockage deep within your plumbing system. A professional plumber will have the equipment and the know-how to get that clog out and clean out the drain without damaging your delicate pipes and causing additional damage.

Minor drywall repair – DIY

Minor dings, dents and holes in your drywall are inevitable, but small holes in the drywall are easy to fix. You’ll need some drywall mud, a flat putty knife and drywall sander. Fill the hole with the mud, scrap it flat with the knife, wait for it to dry and sand it until it’s flush with the wall. If you have a larger hole, you will have to make a patch out of a piece of drywall. You might have to add boards to the framing so you have something to pin the drywall patch to. Once it’s in place, tape the seams, apply the drywall mud and finish with sanding when dry. Taping, mudding and sanding will take some practice to get it perfect.

Major drywall installation – Leave to the Pros

Large drywall projects like finishing your basement or other huge renovations should be left to the pros. Taping, mudding and sanding takes a lot of experience and practice to get right. If you try to do it yourself, you’ll likely end up with a lot of wasted materials and noticeable, bumpy seams on your walls and ceiling.

Changing a light switch – DIY

While most electrical work should be left to the professionals, due to the risk of injury and even death that comes with electricity, replacing a light switch is an easy and relatively safe job for DIYers. Turn off the circuit breaker or all of the power to the home first, and use a flathead screwdriver to remove the faceplate covering the switch. You’ll see the two wires connected to the old switch. Disconnect the wires from the old switch and attach them to the new one. Put everything back together and turn the power back on.

Electrical repair – Leave to the Pros

Electricity can be very dangerous and any major electrical repair or installation should be left to the pros. Whether you want to install new fixtures or run new wiring or suspect that you have an issue with your current wiring, always call in a skilled and certified electrician. Putting your home and family in danger of an electrical fire or electrocuting yourself is just not worth the risk!

Painting a room – DIY

Painting your home’s interior is one of the easiest and most affordable things you can do to completely upgrade your home. Avid do-it-yourselfers can tackle smaller paint jobs with the right materials and some instructions from your local paint supply store. Make sure you prepare your walls properly to be painted before hand. This will ensure better results when you are finished.

Exterior paint jobs – Leave to the Pros

Painting a room in your home is something you can tackle over the weekend, painting your entire home’s exterior is a job that should be left to the pros. Balancing on ladders and rooftops is potentially dangerous work. A professional painting company will have the proper equipment, including ladders and scaffolding, to do the job safely and efficiently. You will also find that they can do it in a fraction of the time it would take you and with beautiful, professional results, you’ll be glad you spent the money.

Hardwood Floors

Clean hardwood floors – DIY

Caring for your hardwood floors will keep them looking rich and beautiful for years to come. You can easily clean them by first using a vacuum to remove dirt and dust that can scratch the floor. You can purchase a wood-cleaning product to mop the floor. Make sure you read the instructions first! Make sure your mop is only damp, not wet, as you don’t want water to penetrate the floor. Then use clean water, wringing out the excess water, to remove the cleaner. Wipe the floors down with a clean, dry towel to remove standing water.

Refinish hardwood floors – Leave to the Pros

If your hardwood floors look worn out or damaged, they could be refinished to restore them back to their original new-looking condition. Refinishing floors takes a lot of practice and is a very difficult job to get right. Hiring HGB Construction to refinish your floors will ensure your floors look brand new with no blemishes!
