Toggle1. Give your furnace and exposed ducts a visual inspection.
Look at your furnace and its venting pipe to ensure it’s securely fastened. Check the ducts for any holes and disconnected sections. If there are leaks, then it means you are losing hot air before it reaches your living spaces. Having these fixed will improve your energy efficiency.
You can also inspect the heat exchanger for cracks or rust. A crack in the heat exchanger can cause a carbon monoxide leak or the burner flames to flicker outside of the opening. If you find damage, have it replaced immediately.
2. Clean burners and flame sensor.
Check the burners for dust build-up. If they are dirty it might influence how your furnace is firing up. You can clean them and other inner components of the furnace easily by brushing off the dust and debris with a soft, dry paint brush and gently removing the debris with a vacuum cleaner.
While you’re at it, you can also inspect and clean the flame sensor if necessary. A dirty flame sensor can stop your furnace from operating completely. All you have to do is unscrew it, hold it at the bottom and clean it off with a wire brush or emery cloth. Once it’s clean, just screw it back in. Learn more about how to clean flame sensor rods.
3. Change your furnace filter.
It’s a good idea to change the furnace filter every few months, or as instructed by your furnace’s manufacturer. A dirty or clogged furnace filter will make your furnace work overtime trying to heat your home, diminishing your heating systems efficiency and in some cases, even causing the furnace to burn out. Not only will changing the filter help you save money on your energy bill, it can also prolong the life of your furnace.
4. Have an annual furnace tune up.
