Choosing the right air conditioner

Spring is here and you might be thinking about upgrading your air conditioner or installing a new one for the first time. Ledrix HVAC Services in Calgary is a full-service heating and cooling company. They share some helpful information on how to choose an air conditioner.

Go with a reputable AC brand.

Big brands gain reputations for a reason! Most major air conditioner brands offer a range of models, so choosing the right model for your home’s cooling needs can be challenging. If you’re unsure what brand is the best, call a few reputable HVAC contractors and ask their opinions on preferred brands. Every installer will have an opinion, but since they’re the ones in the business, they can make good recommendations.

Ask questions about warranty.

First, make sure you choose a brand that has a distribution centre in Calgary or nearby. If there is an issue or part failure during warranty, you don’t want to wait ages for the part to be shipped here. Ask about the company’s warranty claim process. Who files the claim, you or the contractor? How long does it take for a claim to be processed?

Most major brands offer the standard 5-year limited warranty on parts and 1-year warranty on labour. Most air conditioners can be upgraded to a 10-year limited warranty with an online registration of the equipment. Some conditions apply, so be sure to check with your specific model and manufacturer.

Learn about SEER ratings.

AC units are categorized based on their SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating). A SEER rating of a unit is the cooling output during a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period. The higher the SEER rating, the better the efficiency.

How loud the AC is can be related to the SEER rating. More energy efficient compressors and condenser fan motors are quieter, so the higher the SEER rating, the quieter your air conditioner will be. The higher the SEER rating, the bigger the unit is physically. So if space is a premium, you might have to settle for a lower SEER rated AC unit.

Consider the cost.

If you’re looking for a basic and affordable air conditioner, with no bells and whistles, there might not be a big price different between a name brand and a value brand for those most basic models. In some cases, a big-name brand will make value brand units that are much cheaper but also contain lower quality components. It depends what you’re looking for in a cooling system. If you’re staying in your home for a long time, you probably want to invest in a higher quality system. It will last longer, likely run more efficiently and save you money in the long run.

Hire an HVAC company you can trust, and then trust in them!

Make sure you feel confident with the air conditioning installer you’ve chosen. A knowledgeable and reputable HVAC contractor will guide you through the process of choosing a cooling system that is right for your home, your specific needs and your budget. Professional HVAC installers have the training, certification and experience to know what’s best. Trust that they know what is going to be the best system to fit your needs.
